Butter is something used in many recipes. It is a southern staple and honestly makes things taste super yummy. As a teacher, I have always wanted to try this with a class by making butter in a jar but never had the chance so I decided to try to make it at home. I was honestly very skeptical that it would be a success and that it would actually taste good due to my lack of experience in the kitchen. I was pleasantly surprised and honestly felt quite accomplished with such a simple recipe. If you need a fun and simple cooking “experiment” with the kids or just want to have some butter that you made yourself, give this recipe a try and enjoy!
You will need:
- A stand mixer or a hand mixer
- If you’re doing it with the kids you can put it in a jar and have the kids shake the jar
- 1 quart of heavy whipping cream
- 1/2 tsp salt
Instructions:
- Pour the heavy cream into the mixer bowl and set to medium speed. I used the whisk attachment on the stand mixer.
- Keep checking in on the consistency until it is no longer creamy and has formed the clumps.
- When liquid and clumps have separated, drain liquid into a separate bowl or container.
- This is buttermilk that you can use for other cooking. I strained it through a cheese cloth and then stored in a mason jar in the fridge.
- Add some cold water to your bowl with the butter and the salt and mix for about another minute or two.
- Pour liquid into the sink and then dump the butter into a cheese cloth and squeeze the remaining liquid out.
